The risk of online fraud increases during the festive season. Keep your digital payments secure and protect your hard-earned money with these 5 essential tips from the NPCI. Find out how.
During the festive season, people engage more in online shopping and use UPI payments. On occasions like Dhanteras and Diwali, many companies offer discounts, cashback, and free gifts. However, this period also sees an increased risk of online fraud. Scammers may send fake messages or links to steal money from people's bank accounts.

In light of this, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has provided 5 essential tips to ensure the safety of your digital payments:

1. Do not click on unknown links

During the festive season, you may receive various messages on your mobile phone offering deals. Avoid clicking on any unknown links contained within these messages. Always use the company's official website or app for your purchases.

2. Never share your OTP with anyone

Do not disclose your bank or UPI-related OTP to anyone. Scammers may call, posing as bank employees, and ask for your OTP—be wary of such individuals.

3. Be cautious of 'gifts' and 'cashback' offers

If an unknown person tries to lure you with promises of large cashback amounts or free gifts, verify the claims first. Such offers can often be a front for fraud.

4. Verify details before making a payment

Before sending money via UPI, carefully check the recipient's name and the amount displayed on your mobile screen. Ensure you are not sending money to the wrong account.

5. Do not make hasty decisions

If someone calls and demands an immediate payment—or threatens that your bank account will be closed—do not panic. First, verify the authenticity of their claims.

The NPCI advises that when making digital payments, you should pause, think, and then proceed. With a little caution, you can protect your hard-earned money from online fraud.
