According to a recent Google report, 40 percent of the world's Android smartphones (approximately over 1 billion devices) are vulnerable to cyberattacks. The majority of these devices are running older operating systems (Android 13 or earlier), which no longer receive security updates from the company. Hackers have exploited these vulnerabilities to steal data. Users are advised to immediately update their devices or purchase a new handset for better security.

Older OS Becomes a Hacker's Weapon
The report indicates that smartphones running Android 13 or older versions are no longer secure. Smartphone companies typically release security patches for a limited time, usually 3 to 5 years. Once support ends, vulnerabilities (bugs) in the phone's software remain unpatched, allowing hackers to install malware or spyware on your device.

How Many Phones Are on Which Android Version?

According to data available until December, only 7.5% of smartphones worldwide are running Android 16.  Meanwhile, 19.3% of devices are on Android 15, 17.9% on Android 14, and 13.9% of smartphones are running Android 13. This means a large number of users are still using older Android operating systems and are not receiving timely security updates.

Are Smartphones Not Receiving Security Support?
According to the report, currently, only about 58 percent of smartphones are within the security support window. Conversely, approximately 40 percent of smartphones are no longer receiving new security updates. Security updates fix bugs, vulnerabilities, and cyber flaws present in older operating systems. Hackers can exploit these vulnerabilities to infiltrate smartphones, steal data, hack phones, or install spyware. Therefore, regular updates are crucial not only for phone performance but also for your digital security.

What to Do for Security?

Google has advised Android users to update their smartphones to the latest Android OS. They should avoid installing third-party apps and regularly install security patches. If a smartphone is no longer supported by the manufacturer, users should consider getting a new device with ongoing update support as soon as possible.

What are the differences in security between Android and iPhone?
The report states that iPhone users continue to receive iOS and security updates for older models for a longer period, while support for many Android smartphones ends after 4 to 5 years. However, some companies, such as Google and its Pixel brand, have announced that they will provide security updates for their select devices for up to seven years, which is improving the Android ecosystem.
