In IIT Bhubaneswar's 2026 B.Tech placement report, Electrical Engineering has surpassed Computer Science in terms of placement rates. Electrical Engineering in the lead

According to IIT Bhubaneswar's 2026 placement report, 68 Electrical Engineering students participated in placements, with 62 securing jobs. This resulted in a placement rate of 91.1% for the branch. The average annual package for this branch was ₹20.4 lakh, while the highest package reached ₹74.3 lakh. These IIT figures indicate that the demand for Electrical Engineering remains high.

Good job opportunities in CSE too

Computer Science Engineering (CSE) is generally considered the most sought-after branch at IITs. In IIT Bhubaneswar's 2026 data, 69 CSE students participated in placements, and 60 secured jobs, resulting in a placement rate of 86.9%. Although this rate is lower than that of Electrical Engineering, the average package for CSE was ₹25.7 lakh—higher than the average package for Electrical Engineering in this report. The highest package in CSE was ₹74.3 lakh.

What about Mechanical and other branches?

Mechanical Engineering did not lag behind in terms of placements either. Out of 61 students from this branch, 54 secured jobs, resulting in a placement rate of 88.5%. In Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, 17 out of 19 students secured placements, representing a placement rate of 89.4 percent. Meanwhile, the placement rate stood at 76.4 percent for Electronics and Communication Engineering and 77.7 percent for Civil Engineering. This indicates that while job opportunities exist across all branches, placement rates vary.

Which branch secured the highest package?

Regarding the highest packages, the report shows that students from both Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Engineering received offers reaching up to ₹74.3 lakh per annum. The highest package in ECE was ₹56 lakh, matching the figure for Mechanical Engineering. The highest package in Civil Engineering was ₹29.7 lakh. This clearly demonstrates that when choosing a branch, one must consider not only the placement rate but also the average and maximum packages offered.

Which branch should one choose at an IIT?

Based on these figures, one cannot conclude that Electrical Engineering will necessarily be the top branch for job placements at every IIT; placement statistics can vary across different IITs and from year to year. Factors such as company requirements, a student's skills, and the college's standing also influence job outcomes. Therefore, rather than relying on a single report to choose a branch, one should consider their preferred subjects, career goals, and the past placement records of specific IITs.
