Employment avenues are opening up in central and state governments for Agniveers who complete their four-year military service; find out about the reservation quotas and benefits offered in police forces and government services across various states.

The first batch of Agniveers recruited under the Agnipath scheme is set to complete its four-year tenure in November 2026. The biggest question now is where these young individuals will find employment after leaving the armed forces. The central government has reserved seats for former Agniveers in certain security forces.

Several states have also expressed their intention to provide opportunities in police and other uniformed services, though the rules vary by location. So, what happens to Agniveers after completing their four years, and where will job opportunities open up? Let’s find out...

25 percent will secure permanent employment

Under the Agnipath scheme, youth are recruited as Agniveers in the Army, Navy, and Air Force for a four-year term. Up to 25 percent of them will be retained for regular service based on a prescribed process and performance evaluation. The remaining 75 percent must leave the service upon completing the four-year term. Consequently, future employment options become crucial for them. Upon completion of service, they receive a 'Seva Nidhi' package; the amount is determined by the contributions deducted from their salaries and the matching contribution made by the government.

Opportunities within the central government

The central government has reserved 50 percent of the vacancies for the posts of Constable (GD) and Rifleman in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and Assam Rifles for former Agniveers. Additionally, age relaxations and other recruitment concessions have been granted. These benefits will be available in accordance with the recruitment rules and official notifications. During their service, Agniveers acquire skills in weapon handling, discipline, physical training, and security operations. With these skills, they can seek employment in security services and other sectors; however, reservation does not guarantee a direct job. Candidates must meet the prescribed eligibility criteria and undergo the entire recruitment process.

What are the arrangements in the states?

Several state governments have announced reservations or recruitment relaxations for jobs in the police, prison, and forest departments, as well as other uniformed services. Uttar Pradesh has announced a 20 percent horizontal reservation for police and certain other government recruitments. Uttarakhand has initiated a move to provide 10 percent reservation in Group C government jobs and has also decided to set up a special cell to assist Agniveers.

Haryana and Gujarat have also announced reservations and relaxations to provide opportunities in police and select government posts. In Maharashtra, work has been done to establish a reservation system for domiciled ex-Agniveers in Group C uniformed government and semi-government jobs. The reservation percentage, eligibility criteria, and implementation details vary by state; therefore, it is essential to read the latest government notification for your specific state before applying.
