Agniveer Salary: The central government has granted a two-year service extension to the first batch of Agniveers. This means that 75% of these Agniveers will now be discharged after six years of service instead of four. This announcement was made by CDS General NS Raja Subramani, who stated that the decision was taken following a review of the Agniveer scheme. During his press conference, the CDS praised the scheme and mentioned that Agniveers would also be provided with skill certificates upon their discharge.

The government has termed this two-year extension for the first batch as a "second tour of duty." A significant question now arises: what will be the salary of these Agniveers during the two-year extension, and what will be the *Seva Nidhi* (severance/retirement corpus) amount they receive upon discharge after six years? The original notification for the *Agnipath* scheme, issued by the government in 2022, only provided details regarding salary and the corresponding *Seva Nidhi* for a four-year tenure.

Salary of Agniveers Following the Extension
Under the *Agnipath* scheme, 30% is deducted from the Agniveers' salary package. This deducted amount accumulates over the four-year period, and the government contributes an equal amount. The total sum—comprising the accumulated deductions and the government's contribution—is known as the *Seva Nidhi*. Currently, over the course of four years, ₹11.71 lakh is accumulated in the *Seva Nidhi* from the Agniveers' salaries; an equivalent amount is then contributed by the government upon their discharge. Additionally, every Agniveer is provided with a life insurance cover of ₹48 lakh.

Year    Monthly Package    Deduction (30%)    In-hand
First         30,000                       9,000                   21,000
Second    33,000                      9,900                      23,100
Third       36,500                       10,950                  25,550
Fourth    40,000                        12,000                28,000

CDS General NS Raja Subramani stated that Agniveers will receive an increased salary during the second engagement period. They will receive a monthly salary of ₹43,500 in the fifth year and approximately ₹47,500 in the sixth year. Additionally, they will receive an attractive 'Sevanidhi' (service fund) package. He explained that the calculation for the Sevanidhi package during the second engagement period will differ from that of the initial four-year engagement period. For the two-year extension, the government will contribute an amount that is 70% higher than the sum deducted from the Agniveers' salaries. In the current four-year scheme, this ratio stands at 50-50 percent.
