The Indian Railways and the Indian Army have jointly launched a new cooperation framework. Under this, retired Army and Agniveers will be offered railway jobs. This will enable them to easily transition to a normal life and employment after their military career.
Recruitments will be announced for so many positions
According to reports, the Railway Ministry has decided to hire over 5,000 ex-servicemen as Pointsmen on a contract basis to fill vacant posts in the Railways as quickly as possible. These temporary appointments will continue until the regular recruitment process is completed.
Railways have made preparations
The recruitment process for these positions has begun in various railway zones and divisions across the country. So far, nine railway divisions have signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the relevant military organizations to expedite the recruitment process.
How much reservation is there in the Railways?
10% reservation for ex-servicemen in Level 2 and above posts
20% reservation for ex-servicemen in Level 1 (RRB Group D) posts
5% reservation for ex-fire warriors in Level 2 and above posts
10% reservation for ex-fire warriors in Level 1 posts
In the vacancies notified for the years 2024 and 2025, 14,788 posts have been reserved for ex-servicemen. These include 6,485 posts at Level 1 and 8,303 posts at Level 2 and above.
What is a Pointsman Post?
A Pointsman is a crucial ground staff employee of the Indian Railways. Their primary job is to set the correct direction of train tracks (points). They change the direction of tracks on the instructions of the station master, ensuring safe passage of trains. They also assist in shunting (connecting and uncoupling coaches) and guard duties.
Provisions in CAPF and Delhi Police
Previously, veterans have been given reservations in services like CAPF and Delhi Police. A 20% reservation has been set aside for constable recruitment in the Delhi Police. The government has also provided reservations for former Agniveers in Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) and Delhi Police recruitment.
What is the Agniveer Scheme?
Under the government's Agniveer Scheme, Agniveers are recruited into the military. The Agnipath Scheme was launched on June 14, 2022. Under this scheme, young people are recruited into the Army, Navy, and Air Force for a period of four years. After four years, only 25% of Agniveers receive permanent service. The remaining 75% are discharged from service.
