Railways: How many candidates secured jobs in the Railways over the past year, and how many recruitments are scheduled for the future?
RRB NTPC, Indian Railways Recruitment: There is good news for the lakhs of young people awaiting jobs in the Railways. Accelerating its recruitment drive, Indian Railways has appointed 43,781 candidates during the 2025-26 fiscal year. Additionally, the recruitment process for over 55,000 posts is progressing rapidly, with final selections expected within the next few months to a year. In this context, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed the recruitment process of the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB). During the meeting, he emphasized making the recruitment system more transparent, accountable, and technology-driven. He instructed officials to ensure the recruitment process is entirely merit-based and proves to be user-friendly and reliable for candidates.
**Emphasis on Increasing the Role of Technology in Recruitment**
During the review meeting, the Railway Minister stated that Indian Railways is continuously working towards modernizing the recruitment process. He noted that departmental examinations are now being conducted entirely through Computer-Based Tests (CBT). Furthermore, officials have been instructed to adopt a tablet-based examination system wherever possible. The Railway Minister believes that the use of technology will make the recruitment process faster, more accurate, and more transparent than before. This will reduce the time required to declare results and provide a better experience for candidates. He remarked that the digital system is proving helpful in minimizing delays in the recruitment process.
**Employment for Over 43,000 People in a Year**
Indian Railways completed the recruitment process across six major categories during the 2025-26 year. Recruitment was initiated for a total of 47,084 posts across these categories, and 43,781 candidates have already been appointed. The highest number of appointments was made for Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) and Technician posts. Out of the 18,799 vacancies announced for ALP, 17,193 candidates secured employment. Meanwhile, in the Technician category, 13,416 candidates were selected against 14,298 posts. Large-scale recruitment also took place for the Railway Protection Force (RPF); appointments were made to 450 out of 452 Sub-Inspector posts, while 4,205 candidates were appointed against 4,208 Constable posts. Additionally, 7,333 candidates were selected against 7,951 vacancies in the Junior Engineer (JE), DMS, and CMA categories. Recruitment was completed for 1,184 of the 1,376 advertised posts for paramedical staff.
**Railways Conducts Some of the Country's Largest Recruitment Exams**
The Railway Recruitment Board is considered one of the largest recruitment agencies in the country. Railway examinations are held across numerous cities and hundreds of centers nationwide, with lakhs of candidates participating. To accommodate candidates, exams are conducted in 15 languages, giving youth from various states the opportunity to take the test in their own language. Given the scale of the recruitment process, exams are held in multiple shifts.
**Several Major Recruitment Processes Still Underway**
Several key recruitment exams conducted by the Railway Recruitment Board have already taken place, and the processes for document verification and final selection are currently in progress. Recruitment is ongoing for 8,113 NTPC Graduate-level posts, 3,445 NTPC Undergraduate-level posts, 1,036 Ministerial and Isolated category posts, 6,238 Technician posts, and 434 Paramedical category posts. According to railway officials, document verification has commenced for several categories, while final results for other categories will be announced soon. Subsequently, appointment letters will be issued to the selected candidates.
Final selection for over 55,000 posts to take place soon
During a review meeting, the Railway Minister inquired about recruitment drives where final selections are likely to be made within the next six months to a year. Currently, a recruitment process for 55,229 posts is underway in the Railways. The largest share consists of 32,438 vacancies for Level-1 posts. Additionally, the recruitment includes 10,970 posts for Assistant Loco Pilots, 368 for Section Controllers, 2,585 for Junior Engineers, DMS, and CMA, 5,810 for NTPC Graduate-level posts, and 3,058 for NTPC Undergraduate-level posts. The Railways believes that completing these recruitments will help meet growing requirements.
