The Ministry of Railways has approved a recruitment drive for 4,098 technical posts to strengthen safety systems and improve operational efficiency across various railway zones in the country. According to officials, the Ministry has decided to fill vacancies across 35 technical categories. Many of these positions are critical for railway operational safety. These roles include Junior Engineer, Depot Material Superintendent, and Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant.

According to a PTI report, an assessment of vacancies submitted by railway zones via HRMS revealed that the highest number of openings are in categories related to safety and maintenance. The details of the vacancies identified by the zones are as follows:
Permanent Way Category: Highest number of vacancies at 845.
Works Category: Ranks second with 470 posts.
Carriage & Wagon Category: Includes 450 posts.
Junior Engineer (Signal): 197 vacancies approved for this post.
Junior Engineer (Telecommunication): 79 posts designated for this role.

A recent circular sent by the Ministry of Railways to the General Managers of all railway zones directs them to initiate the recruitment process based on the vacancies highlighted by the respective zones.
Notification Date: The Ministry has finalized a timeline following consultations with the Chairman of the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB), Bengaluru. Under this plan, the nodal RRB will issue the Centralized Employment Notification starting July 21, 2026.
Strict Instructions to Zones: Zonal railways have been instructed to complete all internal procedures before uploading the final vacancy list to the internal system. It mandates compliance with established reservation norms for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) categories.
**Recruitment of 6,565 Technicians Already Initiated**
The circular also notes that, following the Ministry's approval, a notification for the recruitment of 6,565 technicians has already been issued. This included the following posts:
Signal Technician Grade I: 323 posts
Technician Grade III: 6,242 posts
**Railway Unions Welcome the Decision; Workload to Ease**
Various railway unions have expressed deep satisfaction with the Ministry's decision to fill these critical safety-category posts. The unions state that this move will improve operational efficiency and alleviate the workload on existing staff. Praising the decision, Shiva Gopal Mishra, General Secretary of the All India Railwaymen's Federation (AIRF), said, "Filling vacant safety-category posts is a crucial step toward ensuring the safety of millions of passengers. I appreciate this decision by the Ministry of Railways and hope they will continue to focus on operational safety."
Alok Chandra Prakash, General Secretary of the Indian Railway S&T Maintainers Union, claimed that this recruitment process was initiated following nationwide protests by signal and telecom staff. He stated, "I am glad that the Ministry of Railways took cognizance of our protest and decided to fill long-vacant posts across various safety categories. I hope the Ministry will not only fill all vacancies in a phased manner but also create new posts to meet the requirements arising from the massive expansion of the railway network and its infrastructure."
