Railway Coach Attendant Jobs: Now, only 12th-pass candidates can become Coach Attendants in the Railways; RRB revises rules..
Railway Coach Attendant Jobs: The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) has made significant changes to the eligibility criteria for the recruitment of coach attendants on trains, raising the minimum educational qualification required for the post. Now, to become a coach attendant—whether on Mail/Express trains or premium services like the Vande Bharat Express—it is mandatory for a candidate to have passed at least the 12th grade. Additionally, a three-month practical training course related to housekeeping, along with a certificate from an ITI (Industrial Training Institute), has also been made mandatory.
Until now, the minimum qualification for this position was set at merely passing the 10th grade, a factor that frequently led to complaints regarding the quality of service provided. In this regard, Love Kumar, Director of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Railway Board, has issued a letter to the General Managers of all railway zones, directing them to implement this new system. The objective of this change is to provide passengers with better amenities and satisfactory service.
Appointments Made Through Private Agencies
It is noteworthy that coach attendants are not deployed directly by the Railways, but rather through private agencies. In recent years, the Railways has commenced operations of modern and premium trains—such as Vande Bharat, Namo Bharat, and Amrit Bharat—where passenger expectations are significantly higher. In such a context, attendants with lower educational qualifications and a lack of technical knowledge were often unable to effectively resolve passenger issues, leading to an increase in complaints.
Why Was ITI Made Mandatory?
Under the new policy, the objective behind making an ITI qualification mandatory is to enable coach attendants to promptly address minor technical issues—such as minor faults in lighting, seating, or other onboard equipment. Furthermore, they will be expected to assume a supervisory role within their respective coaches, thereby enhancing service management and discipline. According to the Railway Board, this decision was taken following concerns raised by the Northern Railway. However, given the limited availability of ITI-qualified candidates, the implementation of this measure may present certain challenges. Nevertheless, the Railways remains confident that this initiative will undoubtedly lead to an improved passenger experience.
