The role of a Train Manager comes with a uniform, significant responsibilities, and an attractive salary—though reaching this position is no easy feat. Find out what the salary is and which tests you must pass.
Working for Indian Railways is a dream for millions of young people. There are many positions in the Railways for which one can apply after graduation. One such role is that of a 'Goods Train Manager'—commonly referred to simply as a 'Train Manager.' Employees in this role are responsible for the safe operation of freight trains and ensuring that all necessary railway protocols are followed during the journey. Notably, this job offers various allowances in addition to the basic salary. Let’s explore the qualifications required to become a Train Manager and the selection process involved.
How much does a Train Manager earn?
The position of a Goods Train Manager in the Railways falls under Pay Level 5 of the 7th Pay Commission. The starting basic salary is ₹29,200 per month. In addition to this, employees receive a Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), and other benefits as per the rules. A key feature of this role is the 'Running Allowance'—an allowance calculated based on the distance (kilometers) covered. Since a Train Manager’s duties are directly linked to the operation of the train, this allowance is included in their pay, in accordance with established regulations. Once all these allowances are added, the total salary becomes significantly higher than the basic pay. However, the actual 'in-hand' salary varies for each employee depending on their specific posting, duties, applicable allowances, and deductions.
How is a Train Manager selected?
Recruitment for the position of Train Manager is conducted through the Railway Recruitment Board’s (RRB) NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories) Graduate-level recruitment process. The selection process begins with a Computer-Based Test (CBT-1), which includes questions on General Awareness, Mathematics, and General Intelligence & Reasoning. Candidates who qualify for this stage are then required to appear for a second computer-based test, known as CBT-2. Following this, candidates are called for document verification and a medical test based on merit and established criteria. There is no separate typing test or computer-based aptitude test for the position of Goods Train Manager. This post requires meeting the 'A-2' medical standard, which entails fulfilling specific criteria regarding eyesight and other health parameters.
