Dreaming of a job in the US? Major update on H-1B visas
If you are planning to work in the US—either after finding a job there or completing your studies—this news is important for you. Read the full story here.
This news may be a cause for concern for Indians dreaming of working in the US. According to a new survey, many American companies are no longer as interested as they used to be in hiring foreign employees or sponsoring H-1B visas.
A GMAC survey reveals that only 29% of US companies are prepared to hire foreign business graduates in 2026. This figure stood at 33% in 2025, whereas 55% of companies were hiring foreign candidates in 2022. This clearly indicates a rapidly shifting corporate stance.
Many Indian students studying in the US work on OPT (Optional Practical Training) after completing their education. Subsequently, they get the opportunity to continue working via the H-1B visa. However, if companies reduce sponsorship, securing a job in the US could become significantly more difficult for students.
According to the report, strict immigration rules, rising costs, and lengthy legal processes are major contributing factors. Consequently, many companies now prefer hiring locals over foreign employees.
Visa sponsorship costs have risen, and scrutiny processes have become more rigorous. Additionally, changes in the visa selection process are impacting corporate hiring decisions.
Some companies participating in the survey stated that they would not completely rule out foreign employees. However, the focus would shift towards employing them at offices located in other countries rather than bringing them to the US.
In this scenario, competition may intensify for young Indians aspiring to work in the US. Students should focus on mastering new technologies and in-demand skills alongside their academic studies. It would also be prudent to keep an eye on career opportunities in countries other than the US.
