Big Boost for Intern Doctors in This State: Stipend Increased Significantl

The UP government has raised the monthly stipend for intern doctors. Students undergoing mandatory rotatory internships at government medical colleges and medical universities will now receive a monthly stipend of ₹25,000 instead of ₹12,000.

There is welcome news for MBBS and BDS students undergoing internships at government medical colleges and medical institutions in Uttar Pradesh. The state government has approved an increase in the monthly stipend for intern doctors. Students pursuing mandatory rotatory internships at government medical colleges, institutes, and medical universities will now receive ₹25,000 per month instead of ₹12,000—an increase of ₹13,000. The decision to hike the stipend was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday. This marks the second increase in internship stipends during the Yogi government's tenure; previously, in 2021, the monthly stipend for intern doctors was raised from ₹7,500 to ₹12,000.

Which students will receive the increased stipend?

The new stipend will be available to MBBS and BDS students who have passed their examinations and are undergoing mandatory rotatory internships at state government medical institutions. This revised amount will apply across government medical colleges, medical institutes, and medical universities in the state.

Responsibilities handled by students during the internship

Internship is a crucial part of medical training after completing MBBS and BDS studies. During this period, students work alongside doctors and other healthcare staff in government hospitals. In addition to providing patient care and support, they fulfill responsibilities in wards, OPDs, and emergency services. Intern doctors are also assigned night duties. According to the government, this stipend hike will provide financial relief to students during their internship. This move will also boost their role in patient care and emergency services at government hospitals.

Protests Held Over Stipend Hike

Intern doctors had long been demanding an increase in their stipends. Pressing this demand, MBBS interns staged protests on August 22 at King George's Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow. In addition to KGMU, interns from other institutions—including Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (Lucknow), BRD Medical College (Gorakhpur), and Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College (Meerut)—participated in the protests. Following the Cabinet's approval, MBBS and BDS students undergoing internships at government medical institutions in Uttar Pradesh will now receive a monthly stipend of ₹25,000.
