It was ruled by the Portuguese
Let us tell you that at the time of independence, some areas like Goa, Daman and Diu remained under Portuguese rule. Goa, which is a popular tourist destination of India today, remained under the occupation of the Portuguese till 1961. Goa was captured by the Portuguese in 1510. The Portuguese ruled Goa, Daman and Diu for about 450 years. When India became independent in 1947, the Portuguese flag was flying in Goa. The Indian government demanded Goa to be handed over to Portugal but the Portuguese ruler Antonio Salazar rejected it.
Goa got independence after 14 years
When diplomacy and agitation failed, the Indian government decided to intervene militarily. 'Operation Vijay' started on 18 December 1961. The Indian Army, Navy and Air Force jointly attacked the Portuguese bases. After which on 19 December 1961, Portuguese Governor General Manuel Antonio Vasalo e Silva signed the surrender documents and thus after 14 years India regained its rights over Goa.
