To strengthen its military, Pakistan is preparing to create a new constitutional post of "Commander of Defence Forces (CDF)," similar to India's CDS.

Pakistan's politics and military are once again in the headlines. This time, the reason is a major constitutional step: the 27th Amendment Bill. Pakistan's Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar recently introduced it in the Senate. This bill could bring about a historic change in Pakistan's military system. It is believed that if passed, Field Marshal Asim Munir could be given the new constitutional post of "Commander of Defence Forces" (CDF). This position would be similar to India's Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), who heads the country's three armed forces: the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Law Minister Tarar told Parliament that the main reason for this change is the ever-increasing tensions with India. He stated that the methods of modern warfare have completely changed. In this era of cyberattacks, drone warfare, and covert operations, it has become necessary to further strengthen the military structure. He stated that while many key military positions were previously established under the Army Act, they were not mentioned in Pakistan's 1973 Constitution. Therefore, the government now wants the top military command to be incorporated into the Constitution to grant it legal and constitutional authority.

Increased Turmoil After Operation Sindoor

Pakistan's political and military forces suddenly became increasingly turbulent after India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7th. In this operation, India attacked terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). It is reported that more than 100 terrorists were killed in this attack. Pakistan responded with military action, but before the situation could escalate, both countries declared a ceasefire on May 10th.

Another major development occurred in Pakistan on the same day: Asim Munir was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal. This is the second time in Pakistan's history that such a move has occurred. Previously, in 1959, Ayub Khan had appointed himself Field Marshal. This decision has raised questions about whether the military is once again moving towards gaining political power in Pakistan.

What will be the impact of the post of 'CDF'?

If this 27th Amendment Bill is passed, Asim Munir will become the most powerful military officer in Pakistan's history. The post of 'Commander of Defence Forces' (CDF) will grant supreme authority over the Army, Navy, and Air Force. This will mean that the role of the Prime Minister and President of Pakistan in military matters may be limited. The CDF will now have real military decisions and strategy.

This post will be similar to India's CDS, which ensures coordination and wartime coordination between the three armed forces. This will be a new experiment for Pakistan, which could completely transform its military and political system.

Asim Munir's Salary and Perks

Although the Pakistani government has not yet officially disclosed the salary and perks of the CDF position, reports suggest that the rank could carry a salary approximately 30 per cent higher than that of a Field Marshal. Furthermore, the position could also offer privileges such as lifetime government security, special accommodation, a foreign policy advisory role, and permanent membership in the National Security Council.
