JMI is a minority educational institution, with special reservations for Muslim students as well as for other communities. Equal opportunity and diversity are promoted at every level of education.

Jamia Millia Islamia, located in Delhi, needs no introduction. Furthermore, it is always in the news for its unique reservation system. It is one of the few universities in the country to be designated as a minority educational institution. Following a landmark court decision, Jamia Millia Islamia received this status under Article 30(1) of the Indian Constitution, which led to the implementation of special reservations for Muslim students.

30% of seats in every program at Jamia Millia Islamia are reserved for Muslim students. If a course has 100 seats, 30 seats are given exclusively to Muslim candidates. The university has also provided special opportunities to Muslim women. 10% of seats in each program are reserved for Muslim women.

10% Reservation for Muslim OBC and ST Students

Another 10% of seats are reserved for students from the OBC and Scheduled Tribe (ST) categories of the Muslim community. However, this reservation is only available to candidates from the non-creamy layer. Candidates are required to submit a certificate proving their inclusion in the Central Government list. If seats remain vacant in these 10% reserved seats (for women or OBC/ST categories), those seats are transferred to the General Muslim category.

5% Reservation for Disabled Candidates

Jamia also reserves 5% of seats for students with disabilities. This category includes various types of disabilities, including visual impairment, hearing impairment, mobility impairment, intellectual disability, thalassemia, hemophilia, and Parkinson's conditions.

5% Reservation for Students from Jamia Schools

Students who passed their 10th or 12th grade exams from Jamia schools also benefit. 5% of university seats are reserved for internal students. This means that those who completed their schooling at Jamia are given priority in admission.

Who Can Study at Jamia?

Although Jamia Millia Islamia is a minority institution, students from all religions and states can enroll here. A large number of seats are also open for non-Muslim students, and thousands of students from across the country apply every year.
