The current Chief Justice of India NV Ramana is due to retire on August 27, 2022. The tenure of the new Chief Justice of India will be less than three months. He will be the only second judge after Justice SM Sikri (CJI from 1971-1973) to be elevated from the Bar to the rank of Chief Justice of India.
Justice UU Lalit was appointed a judge in the Supreme Court of India in August 2014.
