You will be surprised to know how many times less are seats of IIT than NEET

Both IIT and NEET are the top exams in the country. But do you know how many times more are seats of NEET in India than IIT. Let us tell you today...
Every year lakhs of students appear in competitive exams like NEET and JEE to make their career in the field of medical and engineering. Both these exams are counted among the biggest and toughest exams in India. But do you know how few are the seats available in the most prestigious institutes of engineering i.e. IITs as compared to the MBBS seats available for medical studies? This difference is so big that you will be shocked to know.
Medical seats
Through NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test), admission is done for MBBS studies in government and private medical colleges across the country. According to the data of the year 2024, a total of 55,648 MBBS seats are available in government colleges. If we add the seats of private colleges and other medical courses (like BDS, BAMS, BHMS etc.), then this number goes above 1 lakh. But here we are talking only about government MBBS seats, so that a correct comparison can be made with IIT seats.
Engineering dream – how many get admission in IIT?
There are currently a total of 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) across the country, which are considered to be the highest level of engineering studies. All these IITs together had a total of 17,740 seats in the year 2024. That is, out of lakhs of students, only a few thousand get a chance to study in IIT. These seats can be reached only after passing difficult exams like JEE Main and then JEE Advanced.
How big is the difference?
If we compare government MBBS seats (55,648) and IIT seats (17,740), it is clear that IIT seats are almost 3 times less. That is, there are three times more government MBBS seats than IITs. If we count the seats for medical courses through NEET, then this difference increases even more compared to IIT seats.
Why is there such a difference?
A big reason for this is that the number of private colleges in the medical field is more and the government has opened many new medical colleges in the past years. At the same time, the number of IITs is limited and the number of students in every college is also kept limited so that the level of education is maintained.
