IIT Admission Eligibility Criteria 2026: Stepping onto an IIT campus is the ultimate dream for every Indian student. But did you know that the path to reaching the prestigious halls of the IITs is not paved solely by rote-learning thick textbooks? In reality, gaining admission to an IIT is one of the most rigorous processes in the world. It involves not just a test of intellect, but also a strict examination of eligibility. Many students find themselves knocked out of the race due to technical regulations.

For 2026, the rules and conditions for IIT admission are quite clear; however, it is crucial to understand them in minute detail. It is not merely about passing an entrance exam; rather, it is akin to ticking off items on a multi-level checklist. If you fail to fulfill five fundamental conditions, the doors to the IITs may remain closed to you—even if you secure an All India Rank (AIR) of 1. Discover the five parameters you must successfully meet to secure your entry ticket to an IIT.

Want to Get into an IIT? Clearing These 5 Conditions is Essential

There are 23 IITs across India. Gaining admission to any of them is no easy feat. If you aspire to secure admission to any IIT in the country, you must fulfill the five conditions listed below:

1. Passing the 'Trial by Fire' of JEE Advanced

The very first and most mandatory rule for IIT admission is not merely appearing for the JEE Advanced examination, but also securing a high rank in it. You cannot apply directly to an IIT. To do so, you must first make it into the list of the top 2.5 lakh candidates out of the hundreds of thousands who appear for JEE Main; subsequently, in the JEE Advanced exam, you must achieve the requisite cut-off scores and aggregate marks applicable to your specific category. It is the merit list generated from this examination that ultimately determines which IIT you will be admitted to.

2. The '75% Barrier' in Class 12

IITs admit only those students who possess a strong academic background. To ensure this, the criterion regarding 'Performance in Board Exams' is strictly enforced. For students belonging to the General and OBC categories, securing a minimum aggregate score of 75% in their Class 12 board examinations is a mandatory requirement. Meanwhile, for SC, ST, and differently-abled students, this threshold is set at 65%. If your marks in the board examinations fall below this level, you will not be allotted a seat, even if you successfully clear the Advanced examination.

3. The Strict 'Two Attempts' Rule
The IITs are extremely strict regarding their admission guidelines. A student is permitted to attempt to secure admission to an IIT (via JEE Advanced) only twice in their lifetime. These two attempts must be made in consecutive years—specifically, in the year the student passes their Class 12 examinations and in the immediately following year. If you wish to attempt a third time, the IIT regulations do not permit you to do so.

4. Age-Related Regulations
A candidate's age also plays a crucial role in securing admission to an IIT. For the 2026 academic session, students belonging to the General and OBC categories must have been born on or after October 1, 2001. However, candidates from reserved categories (SC/ST/PwD) are granted an age relaxation of up to five years. This stipulation ensures that the IITs receive a fresh cohort of young minds, ready to drive future innovations.

5. Seat Acceptance and the 'No-Return' Policy
This is the most technical of the conditions. If you have ever previously secured admission to an IIT—at any point in the past—and confirmed your seat (regardless of whether you subsequently withdrew from the college), you are no longer eligible to seek admission to an IIT again. If a student is allotted a seat through JoSAA counseling and proceeds to pay the 'Seat Acceptance Fee,' their eligibility for future admission is deemed to have been exhausted. However, students currently enrolled in NITs are permitted to retake the entrance examination for admission to the IITs.
