Will Agniveers have to wait 6 years to get married? Questions arise following a two-year relaxation...
The Agnipath scheme has been modified to provide a two-year extension to 'Agniveers'. This means that those who were previously set to leave the service after four years are now being given the opportunity to serve for a total of six years. Furthermore, there will be a full opportunity to secure a permanent position even after this two-year extension. While this news has brought joy to thousands of Agniveers and their families, a major question remains: will Agniveers be unable to marry for the entire six-year duration? There is significant confusion surrounding this; if the original rules remain in place, those currently serving will have to wait an additional two years before they can get married.
What are the rules regarding marriage?
Upon recruitment into the armed forces as an Agniveer, individuals serve a four-year term. During this period, there is a provision to select 25 percent of the Agniveers for permanent service, while the remaining 75 percent were originally required to leave the service after four years—a duration that has now been extended to six years. The Agnipath scheme explicitly stated that Agniveers could not marry during their four-year tenure. Consequently, while a two-year extension has been granted, the policy regarding marriage remains unclear.
Could there be any relief?
It is reported that Agniveers might receive relief from this restriction. Discussions are currently underway between the military and the government, and a detailed notification regarding the scheme is expected to be released soon. This may include revisions to the service conditions for Agniveers—a development that would come as a welcome relief to them and their families.
Reduced risk of separation from service
The changes to the Agnipath scheme have reduced the risk of Agniveers having to leave the armed forces. The military has indicated that 75 percent of Agniveers who would have otherwise left after four years can now opt for a two-year service extension. Following this, they will still be given the opportunity to secure a permanent position. Only those Agniveers who are found to be unfit or undisciplined in any way will be removed from service.
