While working in these posts, the officer gains many years of experience, and he gradually gets promoted in his career.

This is the first posting of an IAS.

The first posting of IAS officers is usually as Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) or Assistant Commissioner. In this post, the officer has to conduct administrative work in the concerned district. The SDM is entrusted with the responsibility of administration of the zonal division. One has to serve on this post for 1 to 4 years. This is a beginning, where officers get a chance to develop a basic understanding of government work.

After SDM, the next post for IAS officers is Additional District Magistrate (ADM) or Deputy Secretary. In this post, the officer is given higher responsibilities in the administration of the district and gets the right to make important decisions. Officers have to work on this post for 5 to 8 years. In this, officers contribute to policy making.

After Deputy Secretary, the IAS officer gets promoted and gets the post of District Magistrate (DM) or Joint Secretary. As DM, the officer is the most important administrative head of the district, whose job is to maintain law and order and manage development works. This post is worked for 9 to 12 years. After becoming a DM, the work and responsibility of the officer increases and he takes part in important decisions of the district.
