The recruitment process for Assistant Professors in Bihar is currently a topic of discussion. Applications are being invited for contract-based positions in the state's new degree colleges. The biggest question arising from this is: what monthly salary will the selected candidates receive? To find the answer, we spoke with Dr. Akhilesh Kumar, an Assistant Professor at Patna University, who has long been sharing information regarding this recruitment process with candidates.

He stated that Assistant Professors working in Bihar's universities and colleges receive a good salary. Additionally, they benefit from Dearness Allowance (DA) and other allowances, making the total monthly income quite attractive. He clarified that both contractual and permanent Assistant Professors receive excellent salaries.
First, let us discuss the Assistant Professors for the new degree colleges.

He explained that the state government has initiated the recruitment process for 3,687 Assistant Professors on a contractual basis for the new degree colleges. The Education Department has invited applications in six subjects for appointments across 211 new degree colleges in Bihar. Interested candidates can apply online until July 15. Once the interviews and teaching skill tests are concluded and these appointments are finalized, the salaries will be significantly higher than those currently received by guest faculty.

He further explained that, according to the recruitment notification, the selected guest faculty (Assistant Professors) will be paid under the Level-10 pay scale. The starting basic pay for this level is set at ₹57,700. Dearness Allowance (DA) and other applicable allowances will be added to this amount. Currently, the DA stands at approximately 60%, with a further increase expected from July 1.

He noted that based on the current basic pay and DA, the starting monthly salary for the 3,687 new Assistant Professors—following their appointment in August—could reach around ₹94,000. However, the government has not yet released a detailed breakdown of the total in-hand salary. Dr. Akhilesh Kumar further explained that Assistant Professors would receive not only the basic pay and Dearness Allowance but also benefits such as medical allowance, House Rent Allowance (HRA), and other prescribed allowances. When all these allowances are included, the starting monthly salary for newly appointed permanent Assistant Professors could exceed one lakh rupees.
