What is the NEET SS exam, and up to what age can one take it? Apply by November 18..
NBEMS NEET SS 2026: Medical education is not limited to MBBS or MD/MS degrees. A medical professional who acquires expertise in treating a specific organ or a particular disease is known as a ‘super-specialist.’ The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Super Specialty (NEET SS) is conducted for admission into prestigious super-specialty courses—such as Doctorate of Medicine (DM), Magister Chirurgiae (MCh), and Diplomate of National Board (DrNB)—offered at leading medical institutions across the country.
The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has commenced the registration process for NEET SS 2026. Interested candidates can submit their applications online until November 18, 2026. The NEET SS 2026 examination will be held on December 11 and 12, 2026, in a computer-based format. For thousands of doctors who have completed their postgraduate medical studies, this examination often serves as a major turning point in their careers. Applications for NEET SS 2026 can be submitted via the website natboard.edu.in.
What is the NEET SS examination, and why is it conducted?
NEET SS is a national-level entrance examination. It facilitates admission for doctors who have already completed an MD, MS, or DNB degree into super-specialty courses such as DM and MCh. In India, counseling for over 2,400 super-specialty seats across approximately 156 medical colleges and institutions is based on the scores and merit list derived from this examination. Appearing for the NEET SS exam is a mandatory requirement for transitioning from a general surgeon to a neurosurgeon, or from a general physician to a cardiologist.
Who is eligible to appear for NEET SS?
To be eligible for NEET SS, a candidate must possess a postgraduate degree—such as an MD, MS, DNB, or an equivalent qualification—in the relevant field (known as a ‘feeder specialty’) from a recognized medical college or university. According to the board's regulations, a candidate must have completed their postgraduate (PG) course by or before November 18, 2026 (or the designated cut-off date). It is also mandatory for the candidate to hold either a permanent or provisional registration with the National Medical Commission or the relevant State Medical Council. Proof of this registration must be presented at the examination center.
Is there an age limit or a cap on the number of attempts for NEET SS?
A notable feature of this premier medical examination is that the NBEMS has not set any upper or lower age limits for NEET SS. Doctors of any age who meet the academic qualification and registration requirements are eligible to appear for the NEET SS examination. Furthermore, there is no restriction on the number of attempts a candidate can make. Doctors may choose to take this examination whenever they wish to further their knowledge and expertise.
NEET SS Examination Pattern and Selection Process
The NEET SS examination is conducted as a Computer-Based Test (CBT). It consists of 150 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), to be completed within a duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes. The question paper is divided into three sections, each containing 50 questions, with an allotted time of 50 minutes per section. Each correct answer is awarded +4 marks, while an incorrect answer incurs a penalty of 1 mark (negative marking). To qualify for the NEET SS examination, candidates must secure at least the 50th percentile. Qualifying candidates then become eligible to participate in the All-India counseling process.
