What is the age limit for admission to Class 1 in India? Are the rules different in each state?
Under NEP 2020, the minimum age for admission to Class 1 has been set at 6 years across the country, although there are slight differences in the cut-off dates in different states. Let's find out the details...
The biggest question in the minds of parents regarding admission to Class 1 across the country is what the correct age of the child should be. After the introduction of the New Education Policy (NEP 2020), efforts are being made to standardize this across the country. According to the policy, the minimum age for admission to Class 1 has been set at 6 years. The objective is that the child should receive three years of pre-school or Balvatika education before going to school, so that their early development can be better. However, the cut-off date varies slightly in different states, which confuses many parents.
What did NEP 2020 change?
The new education policy for the first time advocated for a uniform age limit across the country. Earlier, in many states, children were sent to Class 1 as soon as they turned 5 years old, which increased the pressure of studies on them. Now, the policy aims for children to begin formal education only after completing three years of pre-school education. According to the NEP, the child's age should be at least 6 years at the time of admission to Class 1. This helps in the better development of the child's language, social behavior, comprehension skills, and emotional stability.
What are the different rules in the states?
Although the policy is uniform, states have made slight modifications at their level, especially in the case of cut-off dates. This is why there is a slight difference in the admission age in different states.
Delhi's rule
The Delhi government has clarified that from the 2026-27 session, it will be mandatory for the child to be 6 years old by March 31st in all schools. This rule is completely in line with NEP 2020.
Haryana and Uttar Pradesh's model
Both Haryana and Uttar Pradesh are following the rule of 6 years of age by April 1st. However, in Haryana, there is a possibility of some relaxation in certain cases, allowing children who will turn 6 by September to be admitted.
Punjab Guidelines
Punjab is also making it mandatory for children to be 6 years old by April 1st, as per the National Education Policy (NEP). Some schools might offer slight exceptions, but this rule will largely be followed.
Some Relief in Maharashtra
Maharashtra is among the states where parents get a little extra time. Here, children can be admitted to the first grade even if they turn 6 by June 30th. This flexibility gives parents more options, especially for children born in April or May.
