It is neither a direct job nor merely a training center. The NDA is a place where cadets from all three branches—the Army, Navy, and Air Force—are trained together. Admission here paves the way for you to become an officer in the armed forces; however, the actual job begins only after the training is completed.
What happens at the NDA?
After clearing the UPSC NDA exam and the SSB interview and arriving at the academy, a three-year journey begins. During these three years:
Academics: Cadets pursue graduation studies (BA, BSc, or B.Tech), with the degree awarded by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
Training: Alongside academics, cadets undergo rigorous physical training and are taught skills such as discipline and leadership. The Final Year: After spending three years at the NDA, cadets are sent to their respective service academies (IMA Dehradun, INA Ezhimala, or AFA Dundigal) for one year of advanced military training.
Only after this are they granted their first posting as a Lieutenant or in an equivalent rank. In essence, the NDA serves as a pathway to a direct government job as a commissioned officer.
Is an English-medium background mandatory for the NDA?
This is a frequently asked question. The answer is—absolutely not. Having an English-medium educational background is not required to fill out the NDA application form or take the exam. Students who completed their Class 12 education in Hindi medium or any regional language are eligible to appear for the NDA exam. The UPSC written examination is conducted in both Hindi and English.
What role does English play in the SSB interview?
The SSB interview takes place after clearing the NDA written exam. Keep the following points in mind:
Confidence matters more than language: During the interview, the board assesses your thought process and how you make decisions under pressure.
Basic knowledge of English: A basic understanding of English is necessary to articulate your thoughts effectively during the interview. However, there is no requirement for flawless grammar or fluent, rapid-fire English.
