UPSC: UPSC will use facial recognition technology in all its exams..

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will use facial recognition technology in all its examinations. UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar stated that a pilot project has been conducted to test artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled facial recognition technology for candidate verification. The new system has reduced the verification time per candidate to only 8 to 10 seconds on average, significantly simplifying the admission process.
The UPSC plans to use the facial recognition system for candidates in all its examinations, including the Civil Services Examination, the UPSC Chairman said on Friday. Training for staff involved in facial recognition and availability of Wi-Fi are crucial. The necessary standard operating procedures (SOPs) are being developed. He also stated that the facial recognition pilot project was conducted at selected centers in Gurugram, where candidates' faces were digitally matched with the photographs provided in their registration forms.
Across all the pilot centers, 1,129 candidates were scanned in various sessions. The pilot project was conducted during the NDA (National Defence Academy) and NA (Naval Academy) Examinations 2025 and the CDS (Combined Defence Services) Examination 2025, which were held on September 14, 2025. He explained that this initiative was undertaken in collaboration with the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) to improve transparency in the examination process and ease of entry of candidates to examination centres. The UPSC Chairman stated that the Commission is committed to adopting cutting-edge technology to maintain the highest standards of fairness and transparency.
The AI-based facial recognition pilot project is a significant step towards a smart, secure, and efficient examination process. The UPSC conducts various recruitment examinations for government jobs, including the Civil Services Examination to select officers for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and Indian Police Service (IPS).
