UPSC CSE 2026 Notification: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) released the notification for the CSE and IFS 2026 exams on Wednesday. This year, the commission has announced a total of 933 positions for the CSE and 80 positions for the IFS. The application process is ongoing. Interested candidates can apply until February 24th.

This time, entry into the examination center will be granted only after face authentication. Several important changes have been made to the attempt limit and eligibility criteria, which are crucial for candidates to understand.

What has changed?
If a candidate has been appointed to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) or Indian Foreign Service (IFS) based on the results of a previous Civil Services exam and is still serving in that service, they will not be eligible to apply for the Civil Services Exam 2026. Similarly, if a candidate is appointed to the IAS or IFS after the 2026 preliminary examination and remains in service, they will not be eligible to appear for the 2026 Main Examination despite passing the preliminary examination.

Furthermore, if a candidate is appointed to the IAS or IFS after the 2026 Main Examination begins, but before the final results are declared by the Yoga, and remains in service, such a candidate will not be considered for appointment to any service or post based on the CSE 2026 result. This means they will not be eligible for re-selection while in service.

Understand the full rule in detail.
Candidates who have been selected or appointed to the IPS based on a previous examination cannot rejoin the IPS based on the CSE 2026 result.

Candidates who secured a place in the IPS or any Central Group 'A' Service based on the CSE 2026 examination may appear for the CSE 2027 examination if they wish, but with certain conditions.
To appear for CSE-2027, a candidate must seek exemption from training for the CSE-2026 course. This exemption is available only once.

Such candidates will only be required to complete the Foundation Course.
If a candidate neither attends the training nor avails the exemption, their CSE-2026 course will be automatically cancelled.
If a candidate is accepted for training based on CSE-2027, they can choose between CSE-2026 and CSE-2027. Training will be conducted for the chosen course; the remaining courses will be cancelled.
If no CSE-2027 course is available, the candidate can join the CSE-2026 course.

If a candidate does not join training for either CSE-2026 or CSE-2027, both courses will be cancelled.
A candidate's seniority will be counted from the year they join the service, and there will be no deduction.

Unless a candidate resigns from their assigned service, they will not be eligible to appear for CSE-2028 and subsequent examinations.

If a candidate wishes to take a one-time exemption from training and use their remaining efforts to appear for the subsequent examination, they will not be required to join the service granted in CSE-2026 or CSE-2027, their service will be automatically cancelled.
Candidates who are assigned to CSE-2025 or earlier will be allowed to appear for CSE-2026 or CSE-2027 once, as per their wish. They will not be required to resign for this.
However, if such candidates wish to appear for CSE-2028 or subsequent examinations, they will be required to resign from their service first.
