UPSC CSE vs ESE: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts national-level examinations for recruitment to various departments of the central government. The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is the most prestigious of these. The commission also conducts the Engineering Services Examination (ESE) for engineers.

The results for the ESE were recently announced.
The UPSC Engineering Services Examination (UPSC ESE) leads to the recruitment of technical Group-A officers in central government departments. This includes services such as Railways, Central Engineering Service, Power and Energy Service, Irrigation/Water Resources, and others. Upon selection through the UPSC ESE, candidates are initially appointed to positions such as Assistant Executive Engineer, Assistant Director, and Assistant Engineer.

Selection Process

The selection process for both the UPSC Civil Services Examination and the Engineering Services Examination is similar. Both recruitments involve Prelims, Mains Exam, and Interview. However, the syllabus for both examinations differs.

Which one is right for you?
If you are interested in administration/policy and prefer humanities over technical subjects, you should prepare for the Civil Services Examination and aspire to become an IAS, IPS, IFS, etc. On the other hand, if you have a deep interest in engineering, dream of becoming a technical expert, and enjoy design, projects, and infrastructure, then you should choose the Engineering Services.
