UP's Rani Laxmi Bai Scooty Scheme approved; these female students will receive a free scooty..
The Uttar Pradesh government has launched a major initiative to encourage female students to pursue higher education. The 'Rani Laxmibai Scooty Scheme' was approved during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Under this scheme, meritorious female graduates will be provided with free scooties to facilitate their commute to and from college. The government aims to alleviate transportation-related challenges faced by female students during their studies and empower them to become self-reliant. Approximately 50,000 female students are expected to benefit from the scheme in the first phase.
**Meritorious Female Students to Receive Free Scooties**
Female students studying in state universities, private universities, government colleges, aided institutions, and self-financed colleges will be eligible for this scheme. The objective is to increase female participation in higher education by providing safe and convenient transportation. The government estimates that around 50,000 female students will benefit from the scheme in the first year.
**Eligibility Criteria and Benefits**
To avail the benefits of the scheme, the annual income of the student's family must not exceed ₹12 lakh. Additionally, possessing a valid driving license is mandatory. Priority will be given to the top 5 percent of meritorious female students graduating from each institution in the 2025-26 academic year. However, daughters of martyrs, students from economically weaker families, and differently-abled students will be eligible for benefits under a special category.
**Additional Benefits Along with the Scooty**
The government will not only provide the scooty but also cover the costs of vehicle registration and insurance. Furthermore, beneficiaries will be provided with a helmet, essential accessories, and five liters of petrol. The government has currently decided to provide petrol-powered scooties, as petrol pumps and service centers are easily accessible across the state.
**Scooty Procurement via Online Portal**
The procurement of the scooties will be conducted through a dedicated online portal following a transparent process. The government believes that this scheme will make it easier for female students to continue their education, enhance their safety, and provide them with better opportunities to become self-reliant.
