UP RTE Admission 2026: The Uttar Pradesh government has implemented a new system to provide free education to children from poor and weaker sections in good private schools. In a government order issued on January 8, 2026, Additional Chief Secretary of the Basic Education Department, Parthasarathi Sen Sharma, has further streamlined the process of reserving 25% of seats in private schools under Section 12(1)(c) of the RTE Act 2009. This order is expected to enable more needy children to gain admission to private schools.

According to the RTE Act, all unaided private schools are mandated to reserve at least 25% of their total seats in the entry-level class, Class 1 or pre-primary, for children from disadvantaged groups and weaker sections. These children receive free education up to Class 8, including tuition fees, books, uniforms, etc. The government reimburses the schools for the fees. A maximum of ₹450 per child per month is provided, in addition to which parents receive a separate amount of ₹5000 annually directly into their bank accounts for books, uniforms, etc.

Which children are eligible?
Disadvantaged Group: Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), OBCs, children with disabilities, children of parents suffering from HIV or cancer, orphaned children, etc.
Weaker Section: Antyodaya, BPL cardholders, parents receiving disability, old age, or widow pension, families with an annual income of less than ₹1 lakh.
Child's Age: Based on April 1, 2026, the age criteria are: Nursery 3-4 years, LKG 4-5 years, UKG 5-6 years, Class 1 6-7 years.
Documents: The child must be a resident of the same Gram Panchayat or ward where the school is located. Proof of residence and an Aadhaar card are mandatory, along with a caste certificate and income certificate.

What is the admission process?
The process is completely transparent and online. A timetable will be issued by the Director General of School Education. A meeting will be held under the chairmanship of the District Magistrate. On the RTE portal www.rte25.upsdc.gov.in, parents will have to upload their Aadhaar number, bank account details, and necessary documents such as caste, income, and residence certificates, and Aadhaar card. They should prioritize a maximum of 10 schools from their ward or Gram Panchayat.

Subsequently, the Block Education Officer and then the District Basic Education Officer will verify the documents. The selection process will be completed through a lottery. The lottery will be conducted under the supervision of the District Magistrate or the Chief Development Officer (CDO) and will be held in two phases. Selected children will be notified via SMS.

Who will be on the committee?
A committee will be constituted in each district for the implementation and monitoring of the scheme. This committee will be chaired by the District Magistrate (DM). The committee will include the Chief Development Officer (CDO) as Vice-Chairman, the Additional District Magistrate, the District School Inspector, the District Basic Education Officer, the Finance and Accounts Officer (Basic Education), and the Block Education Officer of the district headquarters as members. This committee will hold regular meetings to monitor the admission process, address grievances, and ensure that there is no discrimination.
