UP Board Exam: Exam pattern for UP Board Class 12 to change; focus to be on understanding and critical thinking..
Major changes are expected in the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UPMSP) Intermediate examinations starting from the next academic session. The exam pattern is being revised based on the recommendations of the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023. Examinations for Class 11 and 12 students will no longer rely solely on rote learning; the new pattern will assess students' understanding, analytical skills, creative thinking, and ability to apply knowledge in real-life situations. Under this plan, the written examination is set to carry 80 marks.
**Written Paper to Carry 80 Marks**
Currently, practical subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Home Science involve a 70-mark written exam and a 30-mark practical exam, whereas non-practical subjects like Hindi, English, Sanskrit, and Economics have a 100-mark written paper.
Plans are now underway to introduce an 80-mark written exam and a 20-mark internal assessment for non-practical subjects as well. Adjustments will also be made to the marks allocated for written and practical exams in practical subjects. This new system is slated to be implemented in Class 11 first.
**Emphasis on Understanding Over Rote Learning**
The new question papers will prioritize application-based questions. Approximately 35 percent of the marks will be allocated to questions requiring students to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios.
Previously, assessment was based on knowledge, comprehension, application, and skills. The new framework expands this to include analysis, evaluation, and creative ability alongside knowledge and understanding. The new pattern mandates that questions be asked from every unit, compelling students to prepare the entire syllabus.
**Reduction in Descriptive Questions**
The number of descriptive questions will be reduced. Internal choices will be provided for long-answer questions, but these choices will correspond to the same unit and level of difficulty. The objective of the new question papers is to foster contemplation, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and creativity among students. According to officials, the exam will assess students' ability to understand and apply the subject matter, rather than simply writing down memorized answers.
