The University Grants Commission (UGC) has once again issued a stern warning to students and parents by releasing a list of 22 fake universities operating across India. These institutions, according to UGC, are running without official recognition and are unauthorized to grant any valid degrees. Most of these fake universities are based in Delhi, followed by Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Puducherry.

UGC’s Action Against Fake Universities

In an official notification, the UGC clarified that under the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, only those institutions recognized under Sections 2(f) and 3 are legally permitted to confer degrees. The commission found that the listed institutions neither have UGC approval nor are recognized by any state or central government authority.

As per the report, the Institute of Management and Engineering, operating from Kotla Mubarakpur in Delhi, has been identified as a fraudulent entity. The UGC stated that this institute has no authorization to function as a university, and any degree issued by it holds no legal or academic value.

This revelation has once again raised concerns over how such fake educational setups continue to lure students with misleading advertisements and false promises of recognized degrees.

Delhi Tops the List With Maximum Fake Universities

According to UGC, Delhi alone accounts for 10 fake universities, the highest among all states. These institutions are misleading students by projecting themselves as legitimate universities. UGC has advised aspirants to verify the recognition status of any university through its official website before seeking admission.

The commission emphasized that students should only enroll in UGC-approved institutions listed on its official portal to avoid academic and financial loss.

In a statement, the UGC said, “The public is hereby cautioned that these universities have been declared fake and are not empowered to confer any degrees. Students and parents must check the UGC website before taking admission.”

Final Takeaway

The growing number of fake universities poses a serious threat to India’s higher education system. The UGC’s updated list serves as a crucial reminder for students to remain vigilant, verify credentials, and not fall for unauthorized claims. Education experts suggest that stronger enforcement and public awareness are essential to curb such fraudulent practices and safeguard the future of aspiring students.
