BEd Degree Rules: If you think that a B.Ed. will easily make it easier to become a teacher in government schools, then wait, sir! The Supreme Court has excluded those with a B.Ed. from primary school teacher recruitment. Consequently, those with a B.Ed. degree will not be able to teach young children. Meanwhile, let's take a closer look at the rules for TGT and PGT teacher recruitment.

BEd Degree Rules: It is important for millions of young people who dream of becoming teachers to keep the Supreme Court's decision in mind. The Supreme Court has clarified that candidates with a B.Ed. will not be eligible for the Primary Teacher (PRT) recruitment process. These changes have been made based on the New Education Policy (NEP 2020). A new course will replace the B.Ed. for teacher recruitment. NCTE has formulated rules for ITEP.

New Course Replacing the B.Ed. Degree

Under the New Education Policy, the B.Ed. degree will be replaced by an integrated program. ITEP, or Integrated Teacher Education Program, is a new four-year course. Candidates are offered both graduation and teacher training simultaneously. Students who complete this course are directly eligible to teach at the primary to secondary level.

After completing the ITEP course, candidates are eligible for PRT, TGT, and other teaching positions. The aim of this course is to prepare teachers who can teach not just from books, but by understanding children's thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. This program is being considered to replace the BEd degree. This course has already been introduced in many top universities.

What are the rules for TGT and PGT?

There have been no changes to the recruitment rules for TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher) and PGT (Post Graduate Teacher). For TGT, a candidate must have a BEd degree along with a graduation degree, while for PGT, a BEd degree along with a Master's (Post Graduate) degree is mandatory. This means that the doors to TGT and PGT positions are still open for those with a B.Ed. degree, but the doors to PRT positions are closed.

Who is eligible for ITEP?

Students who have passed the 12th grade from a recognized board with at least 50% marks are eligible for the ITEP course. Students from all three streams – Arts, Science, and Commerce – can apply.

How long is the PTET course?

PTET, or Pre-Teacher Education Test, is an exam, not a course. This exam is taken for admission to teacher training courses like B.Ed. or ITEP. A B.Ed. course typically lasts two years, while ITEP is four years.

How long is the ITEP course?

The ITEP course lasts four years. Students receive complete teacher training along with graduation, making them eligible for the PRT or TGT position upon completion.

What is the fee for an ITEP course?

The ITEP course fee depends on the university. In government colleges, the fee ranges from approximately 25,000 to 50,000 rupees per year, while in private universities, it can range from 80,000 to 1.5 lakh rupees per year.

What are the benefits of ITEP?

The biggest advantage of the ITEP course is that students pursue both undergraduate and teacher training simultaneously. This course saves both time and cost. Additionally, students are provided with in-depth training in modern educational techniques, value education, and child psychology.
