The training method for IPS officers is set to change; find out what the new rule is..
The process for the training and deployment of new Indian Police Service (IPS) officers is undergoing a change. Henceforth, newly recruited IPS trainee officers will be attached to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs before being sent to their allotted state cadres for probation and further training. According to officials, this arrangement is being implemented for the first time. The 78th Regular Recruitment Batch of the IPS consists of 151 trainee officers, comprising 135 officers from India and 16 foreign officers from neighboring countries.
This batch has completed the first phase of its training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad.
A New System Being Implemented for the First Time
Under the new rules, IPS trainee officers will be attached to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs before being dispatched to their assigned states. It has been reported that an event for the 2025 batch of officers is being organized at Vigyan Bhawan in this regard. This batch also includes officers from Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives. All the trainees have recently concluded the first phase of their training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy and will now proceed through the subsequent stages of the program.
What Was the Previous Training Process?
According to the IPS training guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2023, officers were previously sent to their allotted states for further training immediately upon completing their tenure at the National Police Academy. The duration of this training was determined by the Central Government in consultation with the respective state governments. This new arrangement alters the traditional sequence of officer training. However, the specific objective behind this attachment to the Ministry of Home Affairs—and the nature of the experience it will provide to the trainee officers—remains to be seen.
The passing-out parade for the 78th Regular Recruitment Batch of the IPS was held on October 17 at the National Police Academy in Hyderabad, involving 135 Indian and 16 foreign trainee officers. Following the parade, questions were raised on social media regarding the marching style of some of the officers.
