The era of rote learning is over! Now CBSE will conduct a book exam in class 9, this system is already running in these countries

The CBSE Board is now implementing open book assessment in class 9. This system has been going on in many countries for a long time. Let us know what can be the advantages and disadvantages of this.
In the last few days, many changes have been seen in the CBSE board exam pattern. Now the board has approved the implementation of open book assessment in class 9 under NCFSE 2023. This change will start from the academic session 2026-27. This concept is completely new for the students and they do not know anything about it. It has been going on for many years in many countries.
Open book exam is not a new experiment. It had started in the law colleges of Europe several hundred years ago. After many years, it gradually spread to other colleges and universities. Today, this system is adopted in A-level exams in the United Kingdom, most universities in the Netherlands, some colleges in the US, many institutes in Singapore and Hong Kong, and some states in Canada up to the high school level.
What is an open book exam?
In this system, students can use books, notes and other study material during the exam. It sounds very easy. For example, a question comes and you turn the book and find the answer. But the real challenge begins from here. Here, just copying a line from the book does not work. Marks will be given only when the student understands the answer and writes it in his own language.
Students should know which topic the question is related to, what is its concept and how can you explain it in your own words. This type of exam tests the deep understanding, analytical ability and practical knowledge of the students.
Focus more on understanding than rote learning
According to reports, most of the students in the country give exams by rote learning. But this method proves useless in the open book system. Here, the topic has to be understood well and its correct meaning has to be derived. This is the reason why this system can get the students out of the habit of rote learning.
What are its benefits
The habit of rote learning will be reduced and students will study with understanding.
The ability to think and analyze will increase. The use of the mind will be necessary to solve every question.
In the real world too, we take references to solve problems, the same thing is taught here.
Having the book with you reduces the fear of forgetting something.
These can be the disadvantages
There is no use of having a book without preparation.
Finding the answer from the book and then writing after understanding it can take time.
The language and presentation of different students will be different, which can pose a challenge in marking.
