Student Visa Process: Studying abroad is a dream for many students. For new experiences, a better career, and global exposure, students choose to study in countries like the UK, Canada, Germany, Ireland, and Australia. The biggest challenge before reaching the classroom is obtaining a student visa. Visa rules and requirements vary from country to country. So, let's explore how Indian students studying in the UK, Germany, and Australia obtain visas.
United Kingdom (UK)
The UK student visa process is online and is said to be easy, but it requires thorough preparation. Students must apply within six months of receiving their CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) number. Visas are typically processed within three weeks. A CAS number, proof of sufficient funds, biometrics (photo and fingerprint), and an English language test are required. Studying in London costs approximately ₹158,523 per month, while studying elsewhere requires approximately ₹121,566 per month.
Canada
A study permit is required to study in Canada. This visa must be applied for before travel. Students must submit a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) and a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL). According to new regulations, effective September 1, 2025, students must submit a total of CAD 22,895 (approximately ₹1,456,233.73) (excluding tuition and travel expenses). The application also requires a Statement of Purpose (SOP) outlining their study and career plans.
Ireland
A D visa is required for courses longer than 90 days in Ireland. This application is made through the AVATS online system. Students must submit proof of admission, a fee receipt, and a yearly fund of approximately ₹1,037,790. In many cases, an interview is also conducted, during which questions are asked about the course and career goals. Students staying in Ireland for more than three months are required to register with the GNIB.
Germany
The most important requirement for obtaining a German student visa is a blocked account. Students must deposit approximately ₹1,235,385 for annual expenses. They must provide an admission letter from the university, a blocked account, health insurance, and language information (German or English). Monthly expenses must be shown at approximately ₹102,948.77.
Australia
A subclass 500 visa is required to study in Australia. A new requirement here is the General Student (GS) requirement, which requires students to answer a series of questions about their background and career plans. Annual expenses must be shown at approximately ₹1,724,763.84. An IELTS 6.0 score or equivalent is required for the English test.
