UGC Notice: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued show-cause notices to 54 private universities across the country, including some in Jharkhand. The UGC has sought answers from the universities for failing to disclose information about themselves. Previously, the UGC had directed all universities to upload information about themselves on their websites.

UGC Notice: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued show-cause notices to 54 private universities across the country. This decision was taken due to these universities' failure to comply with transparency rules. According to a rule issued by the UGC in June 2024, all universities were ordered to make the necessary information public on their websites. However, for failing to do so, show-cause notices have now been issued to all universities, including some in Jharkhand.

Three Jharkhand Universities Involved

The UGC has declared four private universities in Jharkhand (Jharkhand Universities) as defaulters for failing to disclose information about themselves. These include Amity University Ranchi, Sainath University Ranchi, Capital University Koderma, and AISECT University Hazaribagh.

UGC issued instructions

The UGC directed all universities to disclose detailed information about their universities by June 10, 2024, under Section 13 of the UGC Act, 1956.

The respective universities were instructed to develop their websites and update them regularly.

They were asked to provide detailed information on the website's home page so that students, parents, or anyone else could access the information without registration/logging in.

A search facility on the website was made mandatory for easy use.

The Commission was instructed to make the required information available in soft copies in the prescribed format on the Commission's website.

Universities will get another chance.

All universities are once again being given the opportunity to make information public under the UGC guidelines. Section 13 of the UGC Act, 1956, allows the UGC to inspect any university to ensure its financial, teaching, examination, and research standards. Before conducting an inspection, the UGC seeks information from the university, followed by a site inspection. Only then does the UGC decide whether to continue recognition or take action.
