SSC New Rule: What is the new fixed-float rule for SSC recruitment? It will impact millions of youth. Understand it in simple terms..
What is the SSC Fix-Float New Rule? The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has added a new rule for "fix" and "float" options in the SSC recruitment exam from 2026. This option introduces a "sliding mechanism." This rule is expected to benefit millions of young people aspiring for government jobs.
What is the SSC Fix-Float Rule?
Like university counseling, the SSC has implemented the Fix and Float rule in government recruitment. University counseling involves multiple rounds, but according to the SSC Fix-Float rules, there will be a one-time opportunity for reallocation to avoid a protracted process. The advantage of this is that a position that would have been vacant if a candidate had not joined despite being selected will now be open to another interested candidate.
SSC Chairman S. Gopalakrishnan told Navbharat Times that to achieve the goal of 90 to 95 percent recruitment based on the SSC exam, a pilot will be conducted, in which a tentative list of candidates selected for the total number of positions will be released. Candidates will then be asked whether they would accept the offer for the position they are offered. They will be given the option of fixed or floating. The final list will be prepared based on the preferences of the selected candidates.
He explained that the advantage of this is that if a government vacancy remains vacant despite being selected but not joining, another interested candidate will be able to fill that position. In the pilot project, the list will be released in two rounds, allowing most positions to be filled.
Why was the rule implemented?
The aim is to minimize the number of vacant positions and allow candidates to choose positions based on merit and preference. Just like counseling in universities, this rule is being implemented in the SSC. Many candidates do not join even after being appointed, leaving seats vacant. Between 30 and 50 lakh candidates apply for major exams, including the Combined Graduate Level. Meanwhile, approximately 20 to 30 percent of candidates do not join even after being selected.
When will the sliding round take place?
After the first round, there will be a sliding round for vacancies. In this, candidates with float positions may receive higher positions based on merit and preference. The revised final result will then be released, and the appointment formalities will be completed. Candidates who choose fixed positions will be relegated to the next round of examination if they do not join.
