30 January is a very special day in the history of the country. On this day, the death anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, is celebrated every year. Mahatma Gandhi launched many movements against the British to get the country's independence. Due to the movements, he had to stay in jail many times. Given the work done by him for the independence of the country, his death anniversary on 30 January is celebrated as Martyr's Day.

History of 30 January
On 30 January 1948, just a few months after the country got independence on 15 August 1947, the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, was shot dead by Nathuram Godse at Birla House in Delhi. Due to this, 30 January is celebrated every year as the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and it is also celebrated as Martyr's Day on the martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat.

Importance of Martyr's Day

On Martyr's Day, the brave sons who sacrificed their lives for India are remembered. On Martyr's Day, the President, Prime Minister, and other high officials/leaders of India go to Rajghat and pay floral tribute to Gandhiji at his Samadhi Sthal and remember him. After this, 2 minutes of silence is observed across the country to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and other brave martyrs.

What is the difference between Martyr's Day on 30 January and 23 March?

Since Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on 30 January, this day is celebrated as his death anniversary. Apart from this, on 23 March, the brave revolutionaries of the country - Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru were hanged by the British government. This punishment was given to these three revolutionaries for shooting British officer Sanders to avenge the murder of Lala Lajpat Rai. Due to this, 23 March 1931 is also celebrated as Martyr's Day in the country. In such a situation, Martyr's Day is celebrated twice every year in our country.
