School Fees: The new academic session is set to commence in schools across the country starting April 1st. In light of this, parents are currently busy with their preparations. Parents are purchasing stationery for their children, a process that has led to increased expenses for them. Meanwhile, private schools are also making their preparations. Many private schools have already hiked their fees for the new session, while several others are in the process of planning fee increases. Amidst this, the Directorate of Education in Delhi has issued an advisory for private schools. According to the advisory issued by the Directorate, private schools will not be permitted to increase fees for the time being.

Let us examine the specific advisory issued by the Directorate of Education regarding fees in private schools. We will also look into the actions that will be taken against any school that fails to comply with the Directorate's advisory.

Directive Against Fee Hikes: Citing High Court Order
The Directorate of Education, Delhi, has directed private schools not to increase school fees and to maintain the existing fee structure without any changes. While issuing this advisory, the Directorate cited an order passed by the Delhi High Court on February 28, 2026. The advisory regarding the prohibition on fee hikes was issued by the Zone 13 office of the Directorate of Education (District North-West B). Under the purview of this advisory, no private school in Delhi will be allowed to increase fees during the upcoming academic session.

Schools Barred from Constituting Committees
The Delhi Government has enacted a specific law regarding fees in private schools, which mandates the constitution of a School Level Fee Regulation Committee (SLFRC) at the school level. However, the new directive issued by the Directorate of Education has placed a moratorium on the formation of this committee. The Directorate has stated that during the academic session 2026-27, no proposal regarding fee determination, revision, or fee hikes processed through the SLFRC shall be passed or forwarded. Consequently, schools will be unable to increase fees under any head or category. The advisory further specifies that these directives shall remain in force until further orders are issued by the Delhi High Court.

Schools to be Held Guilty of Contempt of the High Court
An advisory issued by the Directorate of Education clarifies that if any school increases fees, constitutes an SLFRC, and seeks approval for a fee hike, it will be held guilty of contempt of the High Court's order. The school administration will be held personally liable for this.
