Mizoram: All schools in Mizoram remained closed on Monday as heavy rains triggered landslides, mudslides, rock falls, and waterlogging in various parts of the state. School Education Department Director Angela Jothanpuii said all 11 district administrations have announced the closure of schools on Monday as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students.

Decision taken after IMD alert
The notifications issued by the district administrations said the school closure directive came following dangerous weather forecasts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which predicted heavy rains and possible natural hazards including landslides, mudflows, and rock falls in several parts of the state. Earlier, schools were closed across the state for two days on May 29 and May 30.

Cloudy weather in Aizawl
Though it did not rain, the state capital Aizawl remained cloudy on Monday morning. At least five people, including three Myanmar refugees, have died so far due to landslides, house collapses and other disasters caused by heavy rains in the state since May 24.

Officials of the State Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department said that so far 60 houses have collapsed or been damaged due to landslides or landslides and floods across the state and 69 others have been evacuated.

They said that till Sunday, a total of 211 landslides have occurred in different parts of the state and highways have been blocked at 83 places. Officials of the state power department said that at least seven 33 KV sub-stations have been damaged and power supply has been disrupted due to rain in more than one-third of the area of ​​the entire state.

Emergency meeting with ministers
Given the landslides and waterlogging due to heavy rains, Chief Minister Lalduhoma held an emergency meeting with ministers and senior officials on Sunday. The meeting agreed to take stringent measures about construction and building schemes as it was observed that many incidents occurred due to human error. The meeting decided to release immediate funds to the District Disaster Management Officers so that they could expedite various works.

A detailed report on the disasters and challenges faced by the state government due to heavy rains will be submitted to the Centre at the earliest. They also agreed to prioritize highways connecting district headquarters and Lengpui airport to ensure that connectivity is not disrupted.
