The Government of Rajasthan has launched an initiative titled the 'Sarthak Naam Abhiyan' (Meaningful Name Campaign) for students in grades 1 through 9. Under this campaign, the names of students in Rajasthan's schools that sound ambiguous or inappropriate will be officially changed.

The government believes that children whose names include terms like Sheru, Shaitan, Kalu, or Tinku are often viewed with a sense of inferiority. Furthermore, as these children grow older, their self-confidence tends to diminish. As part of this campaign, the government has compiled a list comprising over 3,000 names. The students' names will be officially changed with the consent of their parents.

**What is the 'Sarthak Naam Abhiyan'?**

Rajasthan's Education Minister, Madan Dilawar, stated that the 'Sarthak Naam Abhiyan' has been launched to remove derogatory and ambiguous names—such as Sheru, Shaitan, Kalu, and Tinku—from school registers. The objective is to ensure that students do not face issues regarding their self-esteem in the future. Under this campaign, students' names will be officially changed with the consent of their parents.

**List of 3,000 Names Prepared**

The Government of Rajasthan has prepared a list of 3,000 names. Through this list, students will be assigned dignified names. The list includes a total of 1,541 names for female students and 1,409 names for male students. In addition to the names themselves, the list also provides the correct meanings associated with each name.

**Names to be Changed via PTMs**

The Government of Rajasthan has issued directives to all government and private schools to identify students whose names begin with terms like Sheru, Shaitan, Kalu, or Tinku. Furthermore, the process of changing students' names will be facilitated through Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTMs). During these PTMs, teachers will encourage parents to select beautiful and positive names for their children. The name-changing process will also require the written consent of the parents.

This Rule Applies to New Admissions as Well
Under the 'Sarthak Naam Abhiyan' (Meaningful Name Campaign), parents of students enrolling in the new academic session will also be able to select a name from a provided list. Furthermore, existing students will be eligible to apply for a name change in accordance with the new regulations. Additionally, Education Minister Madan Dilawar has stated that it is imperative to remove caste-based names or derogatory terms from official records. He further emphasized that such terms should not be recorded, and instead, a dignified name should be adopted in their place.
