In a significant step towards strengthening its friendship and relations with India, the Russian government has taken an important decision for Indian students by opening the application process for its government scholarship scheme for the 2026-27 academic session. This scholarship will allow Indian students to study at many major Russian universities, which is a great relief for Indian students, as approximately 31,000 Indian students are currently pursuing higher education in Russia, with the largest number studying MBBS. Several Russian universities are participating in this scholarship scheme.

This Russian scholarship scheme is not limited to Bachelor's level studies; Indian students can apply for admission to Master's, MPhil, Bachelor's, and several other programs under this scheme. However, prestigious universities like Lomonosov Moscow State University and MGIMO are not included in this scheme.
Which subjects can Indian students study?
Indian students can study a variety of subjects through this scheme, including various courses such as Pharmacy, Aerospace Engineering, Management, Mathematics, and Economics. If a student does not know the Russian language, a separate program will be conducted for them to learn the language. However, students who need to learn Russian will be taught the language a year before their degree or studies begin.
How will the selection process work?
- There will be no entrance exam or admission test for applying to this scheme. Students will be selected based on their previous academic performance or course grades and portfolio.
- The portfolio will include documents such as research papers, certificates from Olympiads and other competitions.
- When applying, students can choose up to six universities according to their preference, and the final selection will depend on the university's review and the availability of seats at the university.
- The first phase of this scheme will run until January 15th, and in the second phase, the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education will work with universities to allocate colleges to students.
