Regular classes will commence at Jamia from November 10, and second mid-term examinations will begin on November 16..
Following the end of the students' hunger strike at Jamia Millia Islamia, efforts are now underway to bring academic activities back on track. As part of this, the Jamia administration has announced the reopening of the university, effective November 10. Additionally, dates for the second mid-term examinations have been declared; these exams will commence at Jamia on November 16. Students have been on a hunger strike since October 12, demanding the restoration of student union elections. In the wake of the resulting deadlock and unrest, the Jamia administration had previously decided to close the university campus and shift to online classes.
Let us look at the schedule for the second mid-term examinations, the duration for which online classes will continue, and the timeline of the hunger strike.
Online Classes Until November 9
Due to the students' hunger strike and the subsequent unrest, it was initially decided that online classes would be held—originally planned to continue until November 24—with mid-term examinations also scheduled to be conducted online. The Jamia administration has now clarified that online classes will continue only until November 9, 2026, after which in-person (offline) classes will resume on November 10, 2026.
Second Mid-Term Examinations: November 16 to 21
In an official statement, the Jamia Registrar announced that the second mid-term examinations will now be held in offline mode from November 16, 2026, to November 21, 2026. According to the statement, and in line with the academic calendar for the 2026-2027 session, all other student-related academic activities will also be conducted in offline mode. Student Union Elections in August 2027; Hunger Strike Ends After 18 Days
Students at Jamia began a hunger strike on October 12, demanding the restoration of student union elections. In response to the protests, the Jamia administration announced that elections would be held, though the specific timing remained unclear. It was, however, stated that the elections would take place within 15 days of the formulation of a student union constitution. Following this announcement, one group of students ended their protest, while another group continued, demanding the release of an election schedule.
In this context, the Jamia administration issued a new order on October 29, announcing that the student union elections would be held within six weeks of the commencement of the academic session, which begins on July 15. Consequently, it is expected that the elections will take place in August 2027. Following this, the students called off their hunger strike after 18 days.
