The registration window for the 'bridge course' for B.Ed.-qualified teachers working in primary schools has been reopened. Applications for this 6-month bridge course, offered by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), can be submitted from October 21 to October 28. Teachers who have not yet completed the bridge course or have not yet applied for it can register by visiting bridge.nios.ac.in. This course is mandatory for all government teachers whose employment was based on their B.Ed. qualification; failure to complete it could result in the loss of their jobs.

What is this NIOS bridge course?
The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has entrusted the responsibility for this course to the NIOS. It is a 6-month professional training program designed to meet the requirements for teaching at the primary level. Teachers instructing students in classes 1 through 5 are required to complete this course. This rule applies to all teachers who were appointed between June 28, 2018, and August 11, 2023.

The Supreme Court has mandated this bridge course, explicitly stating that any teacher who fails to complete it within the stipulated timeframe will have their appointment cancelled. The course must be completed within one year from its commencement date. Teachers who fail to do so will lose their jobs.

How to apply for the bridge course?

For the bridge course, first visit the official NIOS website at bridge.nios.ac.in.

A second chance in case of failure
Teachers who fail the examination conducted after this bridge course will be given another opportunity; a provision for a supplementary examination has also been included. The total marks for the examination will be 500—comprising 250 marks for internal assessment and 250 marks for the final examination. If, even after this, a teacher fails to pass the examination or complete the course, their appointment will be declared invalid.
