Rajasthan: After Uttar Pradesh, reading newspapers is now mandatory in schools in Rajasthan as well..
Rajasthan: The Rajasthan government has made reading daily newspapers mandatory in all government schools in an effort to promote reading habits among students, improve vocabulary, and enhance general awareness.
According to an order issued on December 31, students will be required to read newspapers for at least 10 minutes during the morning assembly. This initiative aims to familiarize students with current events and develop their ability to understand and analyze news from an early age.
Emphasis on Language Skills Alongside Newspaper Reading
As per the directions of the state's School Education Department, government senior secondary schools and English medium schools are required to subscribe to at least two newspapers (one Hindi and one English), while government upper primary schools are required to provide at least two Hindi newspapers.
The cost of the newspaper subscriptions will be borne by the Rajasthan School Education Council, based in Jaipur.
Schools have also been instructed to select five new words from the newspapers daily and explain their meanings to the students to strengthen their language skills. One national-level English and one Hindi newspaper will be read aloud during the morning assemblies.
Group Discussions to Enhance General Knowledge and Prepare for Competitive Exams
The order further states that students should be divided into class-wise groups and encouraged to read and discuss editorial articles and major national, international, and sports events.
Officials said that this program is designed not only to enhance students' general knowledge and social awareness but also to better prepare them for competitive examinations.
This move comes a week after the Uttar Pradesh government implemented a similar directive in its government schools, making newspaper reading mandatory.
