QS Rankings 2027: IIT Delhi Emerges as India’s Top Institution; IIT Kharagpur Sees a Decline
India has expanded its presence in the Asian university rankings; however, its leading institutions are finding it challenging to keep pace with regional competitors.
The 2027 World University Rankings have been released. While India has increased its footprint in the Asian university rankings, its major institutions are struggling to keep up with their regional counterparts. The QS World University Rankings: Asia 2027 feature 325 Indian universities—including 34 new entrants—making India the nation with the second-largest representation in the region, trailing only China. According to the QS release, the rankings encompass 1,722 universities across 26 higher education systems. Despite this growing representation, six of India’s top-ranked institutions have seen their positions decline in this year’s list.
IIT Delhi Emerges as the Top Institution
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi remains the country’s highest-ranked institution, though its position in Asia has shifted from 59th to 66th. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru ranks second among Indian institutions at 79th place. It is followed by IIT Bombay at 83rd and IIT Madras at 85th, while IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur hold the 90th and 97th positions, respectively. All six of these institutions have experienced a drop in their rankings compared to the previous edition. Additionally, the University of Delhi has fallen out of the top 100 in Asia, slipping from 95th to 106th place. Conversely, Chandigarh University has shown an improvement in its ranking. Chandigarh University moved from 109th to 104th place, while Lovely Professional University climbed from 187th to 154th position.
