The government runs several fellowship schemes for PhD students, offering monthly financial assistance ranging from ₹37,000 to ₹1 lakh, along with research grants.

To promote higher education and research in the country, the central government and various government bodies provide scholarship and fellowship schemes for PhD students. Under these schemes, researchers receive monthly financial assistance ranging from ₹37,000 to ₹1 lakh or more. Additionally, many schemes offer research grants and other facilities.

Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF)

The Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF) is primarily designed for students pursuing a PhD at IITs, IISc, IISERs, and other top-tier institutions. Under this scheme, researchers receive a monthly fellowship of ₹70,000 for the first two years, ₹75,000 for the third year, and ₹80,000 for the fourth and fifth years. Furthermore, a research grant of up to ₹10 lakh is provided over the five-year period.

UGC-NET and CSIR-NET JRF

The UGC-NET and CSIR-NET Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) are the most popular avenues for PhD funding in the country. These fellowships are awarded to students across disciplines such as science, humanities, social sciences, and others. Students who qualify for NET-JRF receive a monthly stipend while conducting their research. The fellowship typically lasts for five years, with beneficiaries receiving JRF status in the initial years and transitioning to SRF (Senior Research Fellowship) status later.

DST INSPIRE Fellowship

The INSPIRE Fellowship, administered by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), is intended for students who have demonstrated outstanding performance in science subjects and wish to pursue a career in research. This fellowship provides financial support to researchers in basic and applied sciences, aiming to attract talented students toward scientific research.

AICTE Doctoral Fellowship

The AICTE Doctoral Fellowship (ADF) is a significant scheme for students pursuing a PhD in engineering and technical disciplines. Under this scheme, selected research scholars receive a monthly fellowship ranging from ₹37,000 to ₹42,000. The scheme provides financial support to full-time PhD students during their research, enabling them to effectively complete their studies and research work.

Prime Minister's Fellowship for Industry-Linked Research

For research scholars wishing to conduct research on industry-related topics, the Prime Minister's Fellowship for Doctoral Research is an excellent option. This scheme is based on a partnership between the government and private industries. Under this initiative, scholars can receive significantly higher financial assistance compared to standard JRF and SRF fellowships; in many instances, the fellowship amount reaches up to ₹1 lakh per month.

Special Fellowships for Reserved Categories and Women

The government also operates special national fellowship schemes for students belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC). These schemes aim to encourage students from socially disadvantaged sections to pursue higher education and research. Additionally, schemes such as the UGC Post-Doctoral Fellowship for Women are available for women who have completed their PhD. This scheme supports female researchers in continuing high-level research work.
