PhD Reservation: Reservation introduced for PhD admission for the first time in IIM Ahmedabad, know how much discount will be available
IIM Ahmedabad has decided to implement reservations for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, OBC, and disabled candidates in its PhD programs.
IIM Ahmedabad PhD Reservation: The Indian Institute of Management (IIMA), Ahmedabad has taken a historic decision to implement a reservation system in its PhD courses. This decision is especially important for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Class (OBC) and disabled candidates, allowing them to apply for Management Doctoral Program (or Fellow Program in Management) at the top business school in the country.
Detailed information in this regard will be released soon. The institute has clarified in a notice that the guidelines of the Government of India will be followed regarding reservation during admission. This decision was taken after the oral comments of IIM Ahmedabad on behalf of the Gujarat High Court, which said that reservation will be applicable from 2025.
How much relaxation will be given
Under the reservation system, if a candidate is from SC, ST, Person with Disability (PWD), Non-Creamy Other Backward Classes (NC-OBC), or Economically Weaker Section (EWS), then he will be given a relaxation of 5 percent marks in the minimum eligibility degree. This will help the candidates of these classes in their educational journey.
Petition filed
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was also filed in this regard, in which Global IIM Alumni Network urged the Gujarat High Court to implement reservation in IIMA's PhD programs. It was mentioned in the petition that the absence of reservation in the PhD program at IIM Ahmedabad, established in 1971, is a violation of constitutional provisions, which is contrary to the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act and the norms of the University Grants Commission.
Standard test will have to be given
According to the PhD admission process of IIM Ahmedabad, candidates applying for the doctoral program in management will have to take a standard test instead of the Common Admission Test (CAT).
