Personalized Learning Software: What is PAL software? Which doubled the speed of studies in Andhra Pradesh schools..

Personalized Learning Software: If you are thinking that technology is limited only to offices or big cities, then the experience of government schools in Andhra Pradesh can change that completely. According to researchers at the University of Chicago, including Nobel laureate and economist Michael Kremer, the learning speed of students has doubled due to personalized learning software (PAL).
How does PAL software work?
PAL, i.e., Personalized Learning Software, understands the learning level of each student and provides study material and questions accordingly. Its purpose is that children of different levels in the class get education according to their needs. In 2019, the Andhra Pradesh government launched this software for students of classes 6 to 9 in collaboration with ConveGenius.
The Development Innovation Lab (University of Chicago) studied students using PAL in 60 schools and not using it in 60 schools for 17 months. A total of 14,000 students participated in this test. In this investigation, which ran from 2023 to 2025, students were given maths questions on tablets.
The results were as follows.
According to the research, the learning speed of students using PAL software increased by 2.3 times. That is, if students without software studied for 1 year, then students with PAL benefited from more than 2 years of study. Girls achieved the equivalent of 2.31 years of study, while boys studied for 1.54 years.
Class 6 students studied for 2.04 years, while in classes 7-9, this figure was from 1.54 years to 2.36 years. That is, the software is giving more benefits to the students of lower grades.
Use and impact
According to Cramer, the more students use the software, the more benefits they get. On average, every student used PAL for 35.3 hours in 17 months. Students of lower classes got tablets easily, so they used them more and benefited from better learning.
Government's role and plans
The Andhra Pradesh government provided tablets to schools, and the expenses were met from the Samagra Shiksha Fund. Teachers help children use and monitor the software. Now the government plans to expand PAL to PM-SHRI schools and secondary schools as well. Chromebooks will be brought to these schools instead of tablets, so that they can last longer.
What will be the benefit to students?
According to Kramer, there are a lot of differences in the learning ability of students in schools. Some students are far ahead, while some are left behind. This difference can be reduced with software like PAL. Earlier, learning has been improved with the use of PAL in private schools in Delhi and government schools in Rajasthan.
