Over 18,000 Agniveers to retire soon; will secure jobs without a written examination..
Agniveer Retirement 2026: The ambitious ‘Agnipath Scheme,’ launched in June 2022, is now reaching a critical phase. Under this scheme, the first batch of over 18,300 Agniveers—who joined the armed forces—will complete their four-year tenure and retire by December 31, 2026. The Navy, Air Force, and Army are set to begin the process of discharging approximately 75 percent of the first batch of Agniveers around November 15. This process will be carried out in several phases.
This raises a significant question: what will the future hold for these Agniveers after they have contributed four years of service to the nation’s borders and its military forces? Those retiring this year need not worry. The Central government and various state governments have implemented specific policies and reservation quotas to help these disciplined and trained personnel transition into civilian life and to open pathways for permanent government employment.
50% Reservation in CAPF and Assam Rifles
The Central government has taken a major step to support retiring Agniveers by introducing reservation quotas for recruitment into the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and the Assam Rifles.
Direct Quota: Former Agniveers will be granted a 50% reservation in direct recruitment for the posts of Constable (General Duty) and Rifleman.
Exemption from Examinations: They will be fully exempted from written examinations, Physical Standard Tests (PST), and Physical Efficiency Tests (PET). The training they received during their military service will be directly advantageous here.
Entry into State Police and Other Government Departments
Beyond the central armed forces, various states and union territories are also preparing to welcome 'Agniveers' (recruits under the Agnipath scheme):
Chandigarh Administration: Approval has been granted to provide a 20% horizontal reservation for former Agniveers in Chandigarh Police constable recruitment, the Prisons Department (jail warders), the Fire Service, and the Forest Department.
State Police and Railways: Several major states across the country have earmarked a quota ranging from 10% to 20% for Agniveers in their police force recruitment. Additionally, quotas will be reserved for them within the Indian Railways, the Indian Coast Guard, and 16 Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs).
4 Years of Experience and the 'Sevanidhi' Package
Upon completing their four-year tenure, Agniveers will transition to civilian life equipped not only with discipline but also with financial stability:
Lump-sum Financial Assistance: At the time of exit, Agniveers will receive a one-time 'Sevanidhi' package (approximately ₹11.71 lakh plus accrued interest), which will be entirely tax-exempt.
Self-Employment and Startups: This fund can be utilized for pursuing higher education, establishing a personal business, or acquiring professional skills.
Opportunities in the Corporate Sector for Former Agniveers
For those who choose not to pursue government employment, the corporate sector offers viable career paths:
Private Security and Logistics: Major corporate houses, the aviation sector, and private security agencies have announced that they will prioritize former Agniveers—who are trained in military discipline—for supervisory and management roles.
Skill Certification: Upon completion of their service, every Agniveer will be issued a skill certificate, which will serve as formal validation of their qualifications for both domestic and international employers.
